Adding power

Is it running correctly to start with?
I'm assuming you have a 4.0L? If you have a 2.5L, the easiest way is to sell it and buy a 4.0L.
Beyond that, a better intake/filter, bored/bigger throttle body, and better header/exhaust will get you a few ponies. Ditching the mechanical fan for a purely electric setup will get a few more at high RPM. You can also swap the later style intake manifold on and again pick up a bit of power in the high end.
If you want more power than that, well, it's going to get expensive. You're really looking at a stroker or a power added (supercharger, turbo, nitrous) at that point.

How serious are you?
How are you with a wrench? What is the most complex thing you have done to any automotive?
How much power would you like to add?
How much money do you have to accomplish said power goal?
Is this Jeep your daily driver?

How much money are you willing to spend , because power cost money you can get a performance cly head and if you still have more money you can get a stroker motor and there are cams you can use and even roller rocker arms . or you can do v8 engine swap . so how much do you want to do ?

Laughed at first... but there are videos on both supercharges and turbo chargers.
Wonder which would be less stress on the 4.0? Seems like cooling would be a major issue for a turbo.

The 4.0 does just fine with forced induction. Tuning for it and staying OBD2 emissions compliant is a bit of a turd.

being around engines for 2 decades i'm honestly impressed that the manufacture was able to get as much as they did out of the old cast iron push rod straight 6. The only thing I can see getting more HP that is still reliable and at a usable RPM is stroke it and giver a little more cam and injector. just my $.02

The engine gets a bad rap because it doesn't have a great cylinder head design. Unfortunately that's not something HESCO or Edelbrock really improved on. Cast iron blocks, pushrods, or 6 cylinders in a row have little to do with specifically limiting power potential.

I think there was another guy too that did more drag racing stuff.
Point was the engine can make power. If it really makes sense to do it is another matter.

A turbo would be desirable over a supercharger IMO, it will be much more efficient and make more power. Engine cooling shouldn't be too much of a concern, but mounting the intercooler behind the radiator is going to be challenging. The last hurdle is either finding someone that can tune it for you, or figuring out turning on your own. Some people use a "split-second" 7th injector to help keep AFR from leaning out under boost.
Jeepstrokers.com is a good resource

1) headers/exhaust/breathing
2) stroker
imo, trying to get more top end power out of these engines (and vehicles) is not what they are designed for, so pay a lot for mods, or buy something else
for low end torque and driveability, that is where the improvements can be made more cost effective
If you look at the various stroke & bored engines on the market, that gives a fair indication. HP from ~260 to over 320 for a 5.0L
Can also swap diffs for a higher numerical ratio, give more torque at wheels
