Default 97 xj rear aal problem.

Hey everyone, I just recently installed an add a leaf kit on my rear leafs. I have had it pulled apart 2x now trying to find out why since installing it I'm getting major wheel hop from about 0-20mph and loud popping/slapping noises when accelerating. Everything looks tight and clamped together extremely well. I have pulled everything apart and re installed And tightened everything up but no matter what with the aal in the packs it continues to hop and pop. I also get a pretty violent vibration at about 30-35mph. I set up an appointment Tuesday with a local spring shop, just thought I'd see if anyone has any info or directions I could point them in.

So you added the AAL in the rear, what did you do to teh front to provide front lift?

I couldnt posisbly imagine what would cause wheel hop just by adding another leaf

The vibration could be driveline related. Have you checked your pinion angle and all of your u-joints?
As for the hop... no idea.

I put a teraflex 2" bb lift on before the aals. I have the coilspacers in the front which brought it up about 2 1/2 bc i left the original rubber stoppers in and shackles in the back. Even with the shackels, the back was sagging BC the springs are a bit worn so I got the aal kit to bring it up level with the front. The only thing I have noticed which might be the problem is the passenger side axle leaf perch and center bolt. No matter what I do the head of the bolt will pull out of the perch hole as where the drivers side is through and flush with the axle. If I tighten the center bolt it pulls the head out and if I leave it loose so it drops down it will flex out of the top of the u bolt plate hole and still pop out of the perch. I'm not sure if that could cause the hopping and popping I'm experiencing.

Driving it with the leaf sticking off the pearch seems very sketchy.
Does the head not fit down in the hole, or does it just pop out? I don't see how it would come out if you torque your u-bolts down.

If it actually doesnt fit well in the hole then I would recommend boring the hole out a bit more

Did you use new center pins and u-bolts? If not, I would recommend new stuff, suspension is just one of those things I'd rather not take chances on, get new hardware. Also when you tightened everything down, was it on the ground?

It is all new hardware. The head of the bolt fits but its almost as if the hole is to large on the passenger side allowing the head of the bolt to pop out. I could go to an larger bolt but then I would have to bore out the hole through to it each leaf as the larger bolt diameter is to big. Hopefully the spring shop can rig something up. Yes everything was tightened on the ground.

Just an update. As it turns out both leaf springs were cracked at the main leaf lol. Both driver and passenger leafs were cracked on the top of the forward eyelet so without dropping the leafs it was almost impossible to see. Make a long story short bought 2 new leaf packs from the spring shop and just installed them. Everything is good to go and driving like a charm.

Well, that would explain the popping and hopping....
