Default '96 knuckles with '01 hubs??

I'm working on rebuilding a D30HP out of a '96 to swap into my '01. Planning to use the knuckles from the '96. However, the hubs that I purchased are for an '01. I recently came to the knowledge that the hubs for the '96 are not the same as those from the '01. Do I need to use the knuckles from the newer axle with the newer hubs? I'm also interested as to what caused the need for different parts, if anyone happens to know.

Thanks for the help

Thanks paulhead, for the link. It is ridiculously useful. Looks like I just need to make sure that my hubs and rotors are matched.
