What the heck is that in ???
All the 350 cid diesels I have seen or can find are north south engines, not east west like that one.
Buddy has a 78 cutlass that started life as a 350 diesel, but now sports a 598 cid 1100 hp, 940 ft lb monster under the hood (no power adders either....just a single 1400 cfm carb).
It even still says diesel on the rear deck........as it turns 5.2 sec in the 1/8, breaking the timing lights with the rear tires.

Holy old thread Batman.
But on the subject of a diesel swap: Cummins is now selling a 2.8L 4 cylinder diesel in their "Repower" program. Advance Adapters has a kit to bolt it to Jeep transmissions. It makes 267 ft-lb of torque and I think 160 HP. Both the AX15 and AW4 will handle it just fine though no one is yet selling a computer to run between the engine and trans controller.
It's emissions legal for all 99 and older vehicles. They might be working on OBDII compliance but there isn't much info out there.
Figure well north of $10K for a complete installation if you do it yourself because you're going to need to figure out the intercooler and a bunch of other stuff. I'd be surprised if a shop would charge less than $25K out the door.
While not cost effective, I think it could be a fun project. I've given some thought to picking up an older XJ and doing the swap.
Also, my family had one of those god awful Olds diesels. It was a 1978 Olds Ninety-Eight Regency. Sky blue with matching velour interior. The car was plush and 25 MPG was nice. But it was the worst. Period. Engine. Period. Ever. Exclamation point. 0 to 60 was something like 15-20 seconds. It was terribly cold blooded. And it was constantly breaking down. After the head cracked before 100K miles the family scrapped it.

Lol, whelp, there's gotta be a cheaper solution.
Buy a 2WD 4cyl XJ.
Gut everything.
Cut off all suspension mounts.
Buy old 4x4 Dodge 2500 diesel.
Yank the cab, bed, etc.
Shorten the frame & rear driveshaft.
Weld mounting brackets to 2500 frame.
Weld opposing brackets to XJ subframe.
Bolt together with rubber body bushings.
Spend 5yrs routing harnesses.
Spend a year getting the steering column to fit.
Not easier, lol. But probably cheaper. And there you go! Full frame diesel XJ that hauls *** and rides like a brick.
