4x4 question

I have what I hope will be a simple question with a simple answer.

I have a 2000 xj 4dr with a 4.5" lift and i was just wondering if the front drive shaft should spin when the t car is in 2H

Yes it does. That's y I took the front drive shaft off of my DD and only put it on when I know I will be using 4wd. One less mass for the drive train to move = a little bit of improvement on gas mileage.

Yep, that's why the MPG of a stock/unmodified XJ sucks ***.

I disagree because Renault/AMC tried the whole vacuum disconnect axle as a way to improve mileage but didnt really work and way dropped for i'm sure cost reasons. Today no trucks or suv's come with lock out hubs and I'm gonna go out on a limb and say lock out hubs came about because it made engineering 4x4 back in the 60's easier to ride smoother at highways speeds.

And XJ's get pretty standard mileage for a SUV from the 80's/90's with reasonable power. Stock at ~200K miles mine was 20-24mpg, lifted on 33's is 17-20mpg (230K and hit 21.5 on one tank driving thru the mountains!!!!) unless I'm really romping on it but Ive never seen less than 15.

It must be my motor but I have 31s and I do almost only in town driving back home and I'm lucky to get 13mpg haha

I have the same situation. City driving with 31's and stock gears I get around 12mpg but when I drove down to Florida and back with a fully loaded vehicle I was getting 22ish!

Let's get back on track. Haha. So, yes the front drive shaft spins. And yes people remove it for better mpgs. Anything bad or can go wrong by removing it? I'm looking to get better mpgs. I'm only sitting at 2-2.5 inches of lift. With some 235's. Lucky to get 16 mpg around town. I average 13-15. Highway is better...usually 18-20. Better I'm sure if I tried. But that's 65-70 with some 75+ passing involved. But anyways....removing the front driveshaft is ok? No issues other then no 4 wheel drive? Like I said just looking to get a bit better mpgs. And please don't ram tune ups and stuff down my neck. It's all been done. Cooling system, ignition, almost everything is new. And most were replaced with mopar parts. Thanks.

thanks for all the info guys, i'm also getting around 14mpg and i'm running 33 12.50s with just an upgraded air filter. i'm looking to upgrade the cooling system, cause it runs steady at 217° with the AC on and gets a little sluggish.
