I have a very clean 96 cherokee with a 2.5 4cly and a 5 speed trans. I would like to convert it to 4wd, but I'm having a hard time trying to figure out exactly which transmission and transfer case I'm going to need.

Is there a transfer case that will bolt onto the tail on my current tranny? Or do I need to source a new unit?

You should be able to find a donor just with the 2.5L, stick, that's 4x4, in the same year range. Then start tearing into it for the swap! I don't know much about the 2.5L drive train, but others I'm sure will chime in!
