3.07 regear questions
I have an 88 xj manual with 3.07 and I want to go with 4.56s for 32s I'm buying soon. All of the ring and pinion kits say that it is compatible with carriers with 3.73 and higher for d30 and d35
Does this mean that I can't regear it because I have 3.07s? Thanks in advance and I will also be throwing an Aussie Locker in the back and lsd in the front. |
No it just means you will have to buy a new carrier

Yeah they make two carriers one for smaller gears one for bigger gears.Honestly i would lose the dana 35 for a chrysler 8.25 it will bolt in.And what your gonna spend to buy a new carrier and a lunch box locker you can almost buy a full size locker that replaces the carrier.

Search Thick gears no carrier change needed.1990 and down do not have c clip dana 35s many hear run them with bigger tires with no issues. If a 97 and up 8.25 is ava grab it and regear no carrier change is needed for it. Also being manual trans 456 will be a big differencs 410s from a 4cyl cherokee would be bolt in and go. Just get high pinion front. Automatics need taller gears than stick thats why there 355 instead of 307 from factory.

I have a 35 in my small block XJ, No problems in the 3+ years of driving it. It's an 86 too. Bolt in axles.

A new carrier or a locker....now's the perfect time.
And while you're at it, support the vendors that support this forum. |
So a full carrier Detroit Locker Will allow for a regear? Thanks for all the replies this forum is the best!
|
Yes it will, as long as you order one for 3.73 & up.
|
OK so my dad is going to buy Detroit full carrier lockers and 5.29 for his 89 Jeep yj 4cyl and since those are 4.10 I might be able to get his carriers and ring and pinions. Would those be compatible with my xj and would I have to buy a different Aussie Locker for a slightly larger carrier?
|
As long as you both have the same axles...
|
Your xj 4.0 .Id just swap both front complete axles .No regear for you then if both rears are dana 35s his carrier will work if you decide to go 410. Save money
|
YJ's are SUA, XJ'S are SOA
|
Forgot yjs are leaf front and rear. At least ya can use rear carrier if fronts high pinion use it also,

Aussie Lockers can fit in any carrier for that axle type, independent of the gearing. The OE manufacturers only wanted to stock 1 set of spider gears, even if there were 2 carriers for the various gear ratios, the ID of the carriers are the same for each axle style and spline count.

In Back a Dana 35 is just not worth putting money into (Carrier or Not), Your options are (In my opinion);
Also I would put the LSD in back, and the Lunchbox upfront, ESPECIALLY IF YOU keep the Dana 35 - The LSD will be better on the road, and the Aussie locker will be unnoticeable in 2 wheel and more effective in 4 wheel - I know you are thinking your turning radius would be better your way, I use to, but watch this video from the owner of Currie Axles. Use the Dana 35 and get a Super 35 kit for about $900 which includes a Detroit Locker and upgraded 30 spline axles shafts (still have weak axle tubes and small ring&pinion strength): Example of one manufactures: http://www.rustysoffroad.com/ten-fac...ir-locker.html a Chrysler 8.25 29 spline out of a 97 or newer (or after 5/96) about $150 used usually bolt (Drive shaft may be an issue), One carrier fits all available gears, About as strong as a Dana 44, downfall C-Clips hold in axles, brake an axle and it can slide out (I installed ZJ disc brakes to limit issues to get off the trail) = $150 vs $75 to buy a carrier for Dana 35. - Good to about 35's a Dana 44 out of an 87-89 Cherokee with Tow Package. But good luck finding one. a Ford Explorer 8.8 with Disc Brakes (a little stronger than a 44 but c-clip too), axle is about 1" shorter or so, need to adapter to use driveshaft, a little more expensive to install. Then you have Dana 60, Ford 9", GM 14 bolt, etc, but all are overkill for 35's or smaller, have different wheel bolt pattern, and require a fair amount of fab. FRONT AXLE The Dana 30 you have now is an High Pinion which is great, but probably has the Vacuum Disconnect for the axles locking which is negative due to reliability, you can get a CAD manual kit about $160, one option to lock would be to weld your spiders and use the kit to lock up both wheels on axle (But weaker axles and joints), still need to be a case carrier to upgrade to 4.56 gears Preferably get a Dana 30HP out of a 96-99 Cherokee, it will have the biggest axle joints, but you could get an older one and just swap the bigger shafts in later, and with the 32's you should be fine either way. Most are going to come with 3.55 gears and require case carrier to upgrade to 4.56 gears (Not 00-01 have Lower Pinion LP, and not wanted) Here is a good article I found looking for the build date for the larger axle joints - http://www.fourwheeler.com/how-to/tr...ee-axle-guide/ |
