Just building my knowledge so I know what do I have to get to finish my 2wd to 4wd conversion that the previous owner of my 88 comanche has started. It's a 4.0 renix 5speed(not sure which 5speed) When I bought it, there was already a hp30 non disco under the front end. I'd really like to finish the conversion. I know that I need and want a np231 transfer case, the shift linkage out of a 5speed xj or mj, a front driveshaft also out of a 5speed xj or mj? A short bed mj driveshaft out a 4wd 5spped. Where I'm lost is can I use my original trans mission and swap tail shaft housings or do I swap a whole trans. Trans shifts perfectly smooth and doesn't make any abnormal noises. What drivetrain parts are swappable between auto and standard xjs and mjs. Are front ds the same between the two? I have knowledge of replacing a transfer case in my 89 xj with the aw4.

Not sure about the Pukegoat (if you're gonna wheel it you'll end up replacing it anyway) but the AX-15 certainly is. The problem is that you must swap the main shaft in order to eliminate the tail extension housing. Not fun unless you planned on a rebuild anyway.

Front DS on automatic models are 1" or 2" longer than manuals.

Best bet is to replace trans at the same time. So should I be looking for a ax15 out of a 4wd with a transfer case? Should I switch over to a external slave then? Currently have a internal.

Yes. Any AX-15 without the extension housing (called 4WD model) will work. If it doesn't have one you'll need the bell housing off of a later model AX-15 with the external slave. You can also find AX-15s in some Dodge Dakotas, you'll definitely need a 4.0L bell housing for that though
