2wd 5spd conversion to 4wd? Is it possible?
I have a 99 xj which is an auto I'm looking to convert to a 5spd. I have found a doner 99 2wd with 100k miles on motor and tranny that I'm looking to purchase for the switch. Since 4wd 5spds are so hard to find now adays I'm hoping this will bolt up to the transfer case. I will be swapping motor and tranny for the doner. My question is will this work? If not I'd like to get some suggestions on which route I should take for a moderately inexpensive build.

Auto to manual conversion plus adding 4x4 is just too much. Sell and buy a 4x4 with stick and save your effort for upgrades. Stick 4x4 are out there, keep looking. I have 2 door with stick. Took a couple months to find.
I see I miss-read your post and your existing xj is already 4x4 so it's just an auto to stick conversion. I think I'd still sell and find the right xj.

Just kinda went through this
2000 4X4 auto XJ, with burnt tranny, got a manual transmission from an older XJ, but this one was 2WD.
took me a few days to have everything swapped.
also keep in mind that the tail shaft output from the 2wd tranny is going to be too large for the transfer-case, you will have to disassemble the tranny in order to swap the output shaft for the correct one (that you still need to buy)
it is quite a project, but it you have the time and don't mind getting dirty I will say go for it!

Thank you for the feedback. So my understanding is to swap out the input shaft leading from the tcase to the tranny? Can I take the existing input shaft out of the auto tranny and put it in the new one? Also I'm putting new lower control arms on today and was curious how long I need to extend them in order to fit a 5" rustys with 33s?
