Good morning all, i'd like to first start off by saying that I know there's probably already been a few write ups on this and it's actually a simple procedure, but i'd like to get some more opinions on how I should go about doing this. First off, let me explain that I bought a 96 XJ last week that has a bad tranny. The tranny makes a loud grinding noise when the clutch is engaged, and just recently sounded like something metal exploded inside and now no longer moves with the clutch engaged. I thought it was the throw out bearing making the noise and that the clutch had gotten so bad that it ground into the flywheel (like what happened on my '88 toyota 4x4) so I said to hell with it and pulled the motor.
Before I go into further detail, when the jeep was together, it shifted into gear, but was a little difficult to get it to do so. it finally crapped out a mile up the road after purchase so I had it towed. After removing the engine and pulling the clutch, I found that the clutch and the flywheel were in fact, still in tact and looked pretty good IMO.
So my question is about the replacement transmission. I would like to add in the full time 4x4 feature if all possible, would that work on this model year? Or will I have better luck just yanking all the donor parts from a jeep at pull a part? Also, am I correct that an AX-15 trans is what I need? What transfer case matches up to that?
Ax-15 came with NP231 behind it from the factory. I however put a NP242 behind my ax-15 and I love it. U ll need to do some modifications to make it fit and to make the wiring work, etc.
