Its completely possible to do it in stages. I did my conversion over a few weekends when I had to drive to work or school on monday.

Best course is to find a whole parts vehicle. Post up on craigslist and local 4x4 sites. A wrecked or rolled XJ is easily 500 or less. Or find someone parting out a wrecked XJ and make a deal. Junkyards are always going to be more money
