Default Is this a 258 4.2 AMC engine?

The number on the side of the block says 402A19. It is an AMC 6 cyl, many years old.
Can someone confirm that the 4 indicates 1984? or could it be 1974? And if so, could it be anything besides a 4.2?

Sorry, that's a lousy introduction. I'll start another thread with the XJ build info. I just brought it home yesterday and excited to get started.

Thanks
Dan

WELCOME Dan

It should be a 258CID(4.2) built on the 19th day of February in 1971.

You can double check at this link:

Thanks Earl. I was looking at that document and read it wrong.
I do appreciate your help.
Do these pictures confirm what you gather from the number?

Seeing it's got a 1bbl intake and the letter "A" in that code it's a 258. I've got a '72 258 sitting on an engine stand in the garage with the code "508A26".

Where abouts are you located? What plans you got for a 258?

I got it!

I'm in southern Oregon. I'll be stealing the crank from this engine and using it to build my 4.0 into a 4.6 or 4.7.

I just recently (2 days ago) purchased a partially build 1998 XJ project that had the beginnings of a Jeepspeed racer build. Suspension ect. The 4.0 is of questionable condition, possibly a cracked head or headgasket. I'll rebuild the engine and add a half a liter with this crank.

For the 258, other than the crank, the rest will be scrapped or sold. The manifolds look good and I believe the head might be too. I'll tear it apart and see what it looks like.

Reason I asked your location is I have a bunch of 258 and other CJ (mostly '76-mid 80's) parts around.

Sounds like a decent project. If you haven't already maybe start a thread here:

I'm sure some of the guys building stroker motors would be interested in the crankshafts in those 258s. Depending on the price it saves a couple hundred over a kit with stroker crank included.
