Default 2001 Cherokee Sport - Factory Fog Lights - Headlight Harness Upgrade?

Hola Everyone,

I just picked up my first Jeep. 2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ Sport 5spd 4x4.

It has the factory fog lights but they do not work. The light on the switch does not light up either. Both relays and fuse in engine bay work. Passenger Panel fuse works too.

My goal is to upgrade the headlight wiring harness as well as the headlights but have been finding that if you do so you "MAY" run into issues with the fog lights but I haven't been able to find a thread where someone has upgraded the headlight harness, headlights, and had the fog lights work too. Does anyone have experience with this? I can't be alone lol

Check the switch. I’ve read that the incandescent bulb inside these switches melts the switch and renders it useless. May just need a new switch.

good luck. Nice XJ.

X2, the bulb that illuminates the fog light switch creates too much heat and will melt the inside of the switch, causing it to fail. I have probably 6 factory fog light switches that are all melted. Finally found one that was in good shape. I run it with the bulb removed.

You will run into issues with the headlight harness and your fog light circuit. Typically there is an issue where the high beams do not turn off. To temporarily get around the issue you can pull the fog light relay. That will get your headlights to work properly, but will disable the fog lights. To get the fog lights to work, there is a trick where you can jump two pins on one of the connectors to bypass the circuit which shuts your fog lights off when you engage your high beams. I can't give you specifics because I just rewired my fog light circuit, but I remember seeing a thread about it awhile back.

I think the same thing too.
Here is a shot of what I am pretty sure was one of my melted fog light switches.

I was thinking of trying LED's in the switch to maybe get around this problem.
