Default 20" Rims with 31 or more inch tire?

Hey everyone,

I think this is a peculiar question...

I was wondering if it was possible to mount 20" alloy rims with 31 or 33 inch tires on an XJ...

I know such tires are hard to find but what do you think the offroad capabilities of a Cherokee would be with that kind of wheel. I think that ultimately, the only thing that changes from a more common 15-16-17" rim is the reduced tire profile... But how would that affect performance?

Thanks for your help, I'm pretty new to this world so I'm looking for advice!

Cheers!

Seems like a bad idea, might be really easy for your bead to get broken on the tire

He never mentioned wheeling it. if you're mall crawling or daily driving you'd be fine as long as you have the lift/cut for it.

And like pointed out, if you're wheeling, you want more tire meat than rim to help absorb some of the impact offroad.

the tires you want will be very expensive, like the same price as a 40" tire on a 15" rim. look on land rover forums, they use big rims like that and mud tires quite a bit.

Yeah my buddie got gear 20's for his hemi and wrapped them in 305/55/20 nitto trail grapplers and the tires were 400 each! Thats only a 33. And you could get a decent 33 for a 15 for a little more than half that.

You wouldn't be able to air them down as much for better traction. If you did you'd be more likely to damage the rim.

Bad idea my brothers buddy has 20's on his TJ with 33's and it just looks bad. If you want to roll on 20's you better wrap them with 44's, just my option.

A tall sidewall is a must for offloading. It helps absorb a lot of the vibration and also when you air down allows for the tire to flex and almost wrap around rocks and other objects for better traction. All of these super duty trucks with 20"+ rims and 35" tires are for looks only and really do nothing but scream poser. Don't fall for the useless ghetto "Dubs" and get a 15" or 16" wheel that is actually functional .

Thank you everyone for your very helpful responses!

To be very honest, this will be for a mall crawling/daily driving/greenlaning rig. My first daily driver is now too wrecked to be street legal (where I am) so that one I'd like to keep for the tougher trails.

Actually, what do you think of that option? 2 XJs for different uses?

Again, many thanks!

If you never take it off road, you'll be fine. Remember bigger wheels = more stress on the brakes and more heat, not to mention ridiculous tire costs.

We don't have those in France officially, and if I had one I'd probably want to go bigger than that! But I don't want either of those...

Now look... I drafted a comparison of these wheels trying to be the most accurate as I can.

I'll want to have them in matte black, and no, I'm not planning to install them on this XJ, this one is the beater! I'll be mouting them on is this one: http://www.leboncoin.fr/voitures/282756412.htm?ca=16_s

Dont go over 18's unless you plan on going to like 38's and up, it will look like its on rubber bands and really wont give the look that i think you're looking for. I personally think 18's (when used with the right wheels) look pretty decent with something like 33's or so.

That large of a rim would be ok for daily driver... But bad idea if you are going off road.. they would ride hard as a rock. Plus not to mention the cost of the rims and gouging them on trails.

My .02.. Pass on 20's save some money and go with a 16-17.. Alot more tire choices..
