2.5 to 4.0 motor swap
I got a 96 Cherokee with a 2.5L 5spd and I was wondering if I could do a motor swap with a 4.0 that came out of a 94 grand Cherokee and everything bolt up to motor mounts and tranny and transfer case.

I have a 2.5L 5-speed myself. I've looked into the swap, and for me it's not worth it. People have done it and if you search around this forum and others you'll find threads on it. It's a huge undertaking - you'll have to swap out pretty much everything. Most people will tell you to just sell your XJ and buy one with a 4.0 in it. If you are determined to have a 4.0 that will be the best/easiest way to get one. I suppose if you found a donor Jeep for cheap you could do the swap if you really wanted.
What are you wanting to do with your Jeep? IMO the 2.5L is not nearly as underpowered as some make it out to be. The inline 4 is just as reliable as the inline 6. Really the only time I notice that I have a smaller engine is on the interstate... It doesn't like 80 mph too much... But on two-lane highways it handles just fine at 65/70 mph.
Now if you're wanting to build a rock crawling torque monster... Yeah you'll need a different engine. But for DD use and light to medium trails you'll be fine with the 4 banger IMO.

Well the problem is someone custom rigged a different alternator(alternator is now bad) and Ac compressor so nothing matches up. They got rid of the stock alternator bracket. Does not have idler or tensioner pulley or power steering pump. It does run and drive for I drove on and off the trailer. But I'm having trouble finding jeeps with the 2.5 in my area at salvage yards. So i found a running and driving 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4.0 for 300 bucks from a friend and want to swap motors cause it sounds like my only choice.

It's not a straight bolt on. The bolt patterns on the engines are different. You might could find a adapter but it might be cheaper to find a AW4 or possibly use the transmission from the donor if it is 4wd.

Sorry Redseal08, don't have anything about the engine swap. But, I do know that you will want the 4:10 geared axles out of your present Cherokee in your 4.0 Cherokee. (:

It won't bolt up. You want an AX15 transmission. Keep an eye on Craigslist and search around. You should be able to find one fairly cheap.
