I'm looking to swap transfer case from my 231 to a 242. I have a 99 xj 4.0 with aw4. I know what I need to swap I just can't get precise info on what years I can get a 242 out of. I think any 91+ 4.0 high output works. Is that correct? I'd like someone who has personal experience in the swap to guarantee.

I'd like full time. Had it on my 91 and my parents Grand Cherokee has it. Unfortunately something came up, I'm trading my xj for an mj. But it has the 231 so I'll swap that one.

Also in Wisconsin we don't have all the off-roading other states do. So the 242 would be better with snow. Just leave it in 4.

 

Didn't trade. My xj broke and the guy backed out. Now I have my Jeep running again. But I dodged a bullet as the frame was patched quite a bit.

So I'm back to looking for a transfer case.
