That's not really comparable... to swap from 2 to 4wd you just have to swap transmissions, t case, front axle, drive shafts...

With an engine swap it's so much more... fuel system, fab work, gauges, etc

I have a 1994 2wd 4.0 auto trans. I am looking at buying a complete running but wrecked 1997 4wd 4.0 auto. Will all the 1997 parts swap into the 1994 ? or should I look for a pre 1997?

None of the interior parts will swap.

If all you need/want to swap is the stuff for 4wd conversion, the answer is yes. Transmission will swap, t-case will work, drive shafts will work assuming you have the same rear end. The d30 front will work obviously..
