15" rims are still the most common size out there, and as far as the offroad only tire companies go (Interco, Pitbull etc) they are not going to stop making 15s for us. That's their bread and butter market. Think about it this way also, 15's were THE wheel size for probably 20 years. Every car had them, from cadillacs, to trucks, to Jeeps, to land rovers, to hondas...

Doubt it. im pretty sure that almost no matter what suspension you have on an xj, you're gonna have some annoying vibrations while going down a bumpy, gravely dirt road.
and depending on your tire/wheel size and how much PSI you are running, you can make those road vibrations go away or intensify.
you dont have to air down that much to the point where you run the risk of f**kin up you're wheel from your tire coming off. because airing down really does help soak up those vibrations no matter what tire and wheel size you are running. and if you are on the beach or in the trails, climbing up hills and rocks and stuff, you can run the pressure even lower like 10psi or less because you arent going to be "going fast" and a 31" tire on a 15" wheel will work a little better than a 31" tire on a 17" wheel in trails and on the beach or whatever because of that extra sidewall. but there are times where the 31" on 17"s will work better than the 31" on 15"s. it also depends on how wide your wheel and tire is too. idk theres so much to take into consideration. it all depends on what you're doing and how you have it setup.

and btw, in my experience 10psi is way too low for 31s on anything except the beach. on a XJ you'll get the most traction around 15 or so on the trails... you'll be bouncing into the wheel at 10.

Here is my take on the matter.
OP, how much are the tires for the 15 in. wheels? Is this a DD or not? Do you see a lot of interstate driving? I mean like every day going 80 MPH.
This is why I ask. I want to do this in the near future.

I have 17 inch Rubicon rims and tires on my XJ and love them, I dont know what people are talking about with the back spacing, even with adapters my tires are still tucked under my flares.
The other good thing is you can get the tires cheap on craigslist due to all the Wrangler guys pulling them off brand new to put new rims and tires on their Jeeps. I got all five rims and tires brand new for $500, turned around and sold my 15 inch D-windows with worn 32's for $300. Score!!! brand new rims and tire for a total out of pocket cost of $200.
Heres a pic of mine on 17's.
