My xj is my third car right now. I've got a jaguar that's my dd and then my 83 convertible volvo that is my pleasure car. My 93 (6.5" long arm, 97 front clip, custom bumper, 32's) is my trail rig that I only take out occasionally and plan on selling here soon.

Bought my 91XJ Limited from the original owner with 57k on the clock in 1995. I was an outside salesman so I was on the road everyday. In the next 5 years I put an additional 150k on the clock.
In those five years all I did was add Prolong to the crankcase and change the oil every 3k miles and and the tranny filter every 12k. I also had to do the brakes at 150k and a TPS at around 100k.
Never had a problem with it overheating or running badly, the only challange that I ever had was with the crappy Bendix ABS system, which went into the dealer TWICE for recall. Since then I have pulled it out and swapped it for a booster system from a 96 and all is well.
Then I got a company car, so I parked it behind the garage. Had the company rig for 5 years, and ended up buying a 4runner because I wasn't aware you could swap out the brake system on the XJ and the damn thing was getting scary to drive (THANK YOU CHEROKEEFORUM!).
But last year I was really missing my Jeep (Been driving pretty much nothing but Jeeps since I was 15, most FSJ), so I decided to pull it out.
Hadn't been tagged in 10 years, had only started it probably 3 times in those 10 years. Six new spark plugs, a new battery and 5 gallons of fresh gas and VAROOM.....
Nothing....beats a Jeep(Cherokee).....

Yeah - DD, 50 miles round trip to work. 2001 Sport, bought it last winter, bone-stock with 58,000 miles on the odometer. I was ignorant of the 0331 head problems but discovered the head had already been replaced, whew! I've been doing little things to freshen it up. The more I drive it, the more I like it! My wife wanted to take it and give me her Camry but no way! She says she feels "smart" when she drives it? I figure with a masters degree, she's smart enough already. I'm taking it to the Chihuahua Desert (Big Bend National Park) 4X4 roads this winter for its debut. At 66 years old, I'm thinking this might be my last vehicle. Fine with me!

My xj 1997 2.5td is my main DD, no real problems however i have had new alternator, battery and radiator to cover essentials for winter mainly. It does about 410 miles on a tank full.
comfortable quite nippy, agile and fits 2 rotties in the boot (just) overall pleased with jeep, little quirks give them character.
Currently stock but will be lifting 3" larger wheels, tyres.

Anything is going to run hot if you don't take care of it.
It will need maintenance, just like any other car.
Don't base your opinion off of *******es that don't know how to take care of their cars.
I spent more time working on my 01 Exploder than I have working on all 3 Cherokees combined.

I use my '91 XJ daily. I run a newspaper route for my state-wide daily. It has @270,000 miles on it and has been one the most dependable vehicles that I have used in the last 4 years. It's got the original (not been rebuilt) 4.0 in it, on 31's and I currently average 15-16 mpg in it with a lot of hills and stop-and-go driving (about 75 miles a day + my around town and other work). I also carry @ 450 lbs of tools and spare parts in it because I run a RUAL route (out in BFE! and if I break down, I have to fix it there to be able to get home). Like any other vehicle (especially running hard miles) you have to keep up with the basic PMCS (lol... Preventative Maintenance Checks and Services).

I forgot to say that mine ran hot when I got it (not overheat but hot). I replaced the t-stat, inspected the water pump, took out the ac condenser and did the ZJ fan clutch upgrade. It usually sits right at 195 now and on the steep hills it's never gone over 210 degrees.

4.0 liters will go further with more things wrong with them than any other vehicles on the road.
but if you not a slight DIYer a Jeep will cost you...but on a flip side they are easy to work on
