I just recently bought a 99 jeep xj 2wd with about 190xxx on the engine. its the inline 6 4.0 Im slowly working on replacing and improving things under the hood. with winter right around the corner I want to lift it. Ive looked and read many forums over the last couple weeks. Im tight on money (as im only 17). I was hoping you guys(and gals) could possibly give me some feedback and some ideas as too what i should do, for example, How high to go (without changing control arms and drive train and such). I want to raise it for some light off-roading nothing intense but also to give me a little more clearance come winter. And of course add bigger tires.So please help and offer your advice?

4wd swap would be better than a lift. Especially for use in the snow. But what is your budget for the lift? That will help narrow down what type of lift you should get.

I'd say your cheapest option would be a 2" bb(spacers and shackles) and 30x9.50 tires.

I dont know what my budget is exactly. I make about 250 biweekly. and i can save for a couple months. id say i dont want to spend more then 250. but i also want height before winter. and unfortunately a 4wd swap isnt much of an option.

I personally wouldn't deal with it. There are so many cheap 4x4's out there, I'd sell the 2wd and buy a 4x4. You'd be changing everything from the trans to the hubs, and ya, and a front axle

okay so if im not doing the swap then what would be a good idea to lift the jeep? I want to lift it without having to change much or ruin anything.

My bad, you'd want a set of longer shocks too.

Keep everything you take off, even if its worn out. You'll should be able to transfer anything you do to the 2wd over to the 4x4, if you bought one down the road. Then you can put the old stuff back on the 2wd and sell it.

A cost effective option would be a 2" budget boost with coil spacers in the front and shackles preferably, or blocks for the rear. You could do some light trimming to clear bigger tires. I fit 31's under my stock 91XJ when I got it.
