Greetings

I'm finally going to get my hands on an XJ soon. I was a fullsize truck nut for a long time but they're just not practical anymore and nowhere near as capable (unless you cut them to pieces). I've always wanted an XJ and now becoming a family man has given me the perfect reason to get into one

the 4.0L is legendary and the overall structure and functionality of these little wolverines is tough to beat as an all-purpose vehicle.

I'm going to be hunting for a later-model XJ (probably a sport model) with the 4.0L and automatic tranny. I'll be looking for one that is completely stock and in immacculate condition and I'll be driving it like that for a year or so before I start to modify it, once I get refreshed on my XJ knowledge some and build on it some more.

My question at the moment to those of you who have driven these things for years is about the fuel mileage. I know they're pretty good on gas but I'd like to know what you guys are getting from them in stock form.

thanks in advance

I've had a few XJs, and they have all been similar. I get 16 to 18 MPG in mixed driving. During strictly highway driving I can get close to 20 MPG if I don't go over 65 MPH, but I usually get around 18 MPG setting the cruise closer to 75 MPH. They aren't econoboxes for sure. They've got the aerodynamics of a brick.

With a new IAC valve, good plugs and two new 02 sensors installed, I just averaged 12 mpg ....which is an improvement from the 10.5 mpg from the last two fill ups.

On a side note, all these miles were in town at speeds less than 45 mph. On a few occasions I was also towing a loaded utility trailer as well. I'm sure if these had been highway miles my mpg would have been much better.

I appreciate the responses.

15-18 was about what I expected. It a lot better than the 8mpg I was getting in the Ramcharger

If you drive like an absolute maniac you can still manage 12 to 13 mpg
