I'd say this is the best explanation. The Cherokee is lighter than the Grand Cherokee. The solid axles in general make it a great choice for offroading, they are easy to modify and cheap to insure. Maybe you have to backup on really tight trails that a Wrangler can just drive through, but the same year Wrangler will generally cost you twice as much to purchase and twic as much to insure.
The light weight unibody design keeps it from getting stuck as often as bigger, seemingly more capable looking vehicles.

For me, room for 5 + camping feat + towing bikes + affordable + huge aftermarket support. But most of all because all xj owners are just so freaking nice!!!!!

The owners being nice is a jeep wide thing. Ive worked on jeeps on the side of the road for hours for people I diddnt even know just to help out a fellow jeeper, regardless of model.

I was a dyed in wool Wrangler man, and still have my YJ.

A few years ago, I saw this video;

I always liked the boxy look of the XJ, but couldn't bring myself to buy a station wagon.

After seeing the vid I thought, what a horrible thing to do to a vehicle. That said, it's nice to know it would stand up to that level of abuse should the need ever arise.

I had to have one.

I've been obsessed with jeeps since I started getting into cars and trucks and fell in love with my wj after realizing how good it actually was and how much worse of stuff there is out there I mean it's not a Ferrari but it handles like a race car and gets most places my big truck friends get stuck

Clarified: XJ's got all the things that made Wranglers great in addition to the renowned AW4 and C8.25.

At first this was a bit depressing, but then I realize that the way this Cherokee died is the Jeep's equivalent of dying in a skydiving accident involving copious amounts of nudity, hookers, and cocaine. Awesome.

I love my XJ. I don't know if I'd go with a Wrangler if I had the option. I love the boxy look. I love being able to transport 4 passengers and my myself, with some room for cargo. The only thing I like about the Wranglers is the convertible option. I can take all 4 of my doors off, but having no roof would be kinda fun.

I bought mine because it was 100 dollars. At the time, i was poor, and wanted something to wheel soooo bad.

Now i've been able to fund my junk, and i love the way the cherokee looks and handles over others. Unlike before.
