Woo hoo! New Cherokee!
I'm back in the game!
I just trailered home a 98 Classic that has been sitting about 3 years. (Last inspection sticker was 6/15). Older man not quite with it still. His daughter wanted it sold before he spent any more money on it. Poor guy fancies himself the car restorer, but it was clear from talking to him that he has never really understood cars. After describing how he overheated it (the [insert long rambling description of the overflow tube] wasn't there, that's why it overheated, he says!) he assured me that a new thermostat and a can of "that pink stuff" would fix it right up.
The tires are shot from sitting (shame!) and there is a problem with the rear hatch not opening, but otherwise, it seems pristine inside and out. I could not see a trace of rust under it, except for the trailer hitch.
$500 and a trailer rental!

This is what I found when I arrived. She had had paid someone $200 to put the front end back together. Since the hood latch doesn't work, I could not inspect the engine compartment from above, but since I'm assuming the engine is toast, and everything looked fine underneath, I decided to gamble.
Some interior pieces had been removed, and were sitting in the back. She didn't know why. Nothing looks broken, but the two front kick panels are AWOL.
Looking for a buyer.
My son loading it up.

whoah man, thats clean! had the same problem with my rear hatch, pry the plastic away from the back and you can usually slip your hand through to pull the latches manually. it's out of adjustment most likely, once its open you can remove the panel completely allowing easy access to fix.

Cool. Thanks for the tip. Worst case I can swap in the latch assembly from my 97 that I have been parting out.
This thing needs rear springs, and I just happen to have a 1 year old set on my 97, along with 4 new shocks. They were scheduled to go on the parts pile that I'm selling, but now they have a new home. Same for the new Bosch fuel pump in my 97, and a few other odds and ends.

Glad to see you found another one! Especially in the best color. Hope you personally are doing better since the last one left a mark... (yes pun intended)

Good find, and best of luck getting things worked out.

Thanks, guys. It really is great to be back in the running. Funny thing is, I wasn't even looking seriously. I have another vehicle here that I want to get on the road, and was planing to get that all done, and then see how much of the insurance money I had left, and start looking. I was figuring later this year before I got serious.
I was just cruising Craigslist and decided to expand the search past my local area, and saw this one. It's in much better shape than I was hoping to get.
In other news, I got my leg brace off today. Man! It feels weird! Just walking (with crutches) into the house left my leg exhausted. Those muscles haven't been used in 10 weeks. My ham felt like I'd been doing a serious round of leg presses. Now for physical therapy to get the strength and mobility back....
