Default Why do people part-out rather then rebuild??

Just curious why you guys think the reason is so many people are parting out a pristine XJ's because the motor blew, is it really that expensive to rebuild the motor or to find one salvaged?

Reason I ask is I just found an excellent XJ (from pics) that's getting parted out locally, of course I'm going to get to his shop tomorrow to get my grubby hands on anything and everything affordable but its kinda sad as there appears nothing wrong with it from pics, I'm just assuming the motor blew and now its salvaged...

This isn't the first time I've seen something parted that looks easily fixed...

why is that??

Because most people would rather get money than put it into a vehicle that will never be worth again what it cost to fix.

Personally I wouldn't part out any XJ with a solid unibody, but most people don't want XJs like most of us do.

The ones that part out their Jeeps are not really Jeep people, or they have a lot of Jeep stuff sitting around and they need to thin out the herd.

I bought a 98 for $400. Knew I could make my money back out of it plus keep 2 things I wanted for my 94 that were upgrades ( rear axle and brake booster w/ MC). Had 25k on it and the suspension was shot. Could I have swapped in another motor and given it to my family? Sure. I didn't because I made money this way and it was a little too rough for me to want to daily, plus I had people waiting on parts before I even owned it.

Oh, and I've made almost $400 off of it before I scrap the rest.

if it's just another vehicle to most ppl why would they keep throwing money at it. there comes a time to cut your losses and move on.

When my first XJ got totaled out ('92 Limited), the insurance company asked me if I wanted to buy it back? I asked how much and they said they'd get about $150 for scrap. I said "YES!." The unibody is tweaked but the motor was still running after my daughter got into the accident. The tranny, TC, both axles (minus the tie-rod and ends)... plus everything but the rad, A/C condenser, front bumper, driver's fender and headlight are all good. SO MANY good parts that I couldn't pass it up for $150.
Now, it won't be road worthy again without a lot of work, but I have a XJ buggy project in mind that would be a blast.
After my first one got wrecked, it took me almost three months to find another. I did find a few that were set up very nice but WAY out of my price range. All the cheap ones were trashed. Around this area, you just don't ever see any XJ's for sale as nobody wants to get rid of them.
I love my XJ (I have wife, kids and dogs to haul and a CJ (or wrongler) just doesn't have enough cargo room) and I HAD to have another. I just DID NOT want anything else.
Like with my '76 Power Wagon, as long as I can buy, trade or make/modify parts, I will keep my XJ on (or off) the road.

I never see pristine ones around me. I parted out and scrapped a Comanche. It was the definition of a rust bucket. The bottom of the frame was gone.

with how many of the jeeps were made and how long ago some have to be sacrificed to keep the others going.

Because they're a dime a dozen.

I parted out a rust free MJ. Does that make you angry?

The book value on this jeeps is slowly dropping down,Adding aftermarket parts like a lift and tires don't really make it worth anymore.Look at the production numbers of the xj total its really common.

Here in Va, XJs are rust free mostly. My 97 needed a head gasket repair.

The PO could not afford the repair, so I got a good deal, $700.

My 98 was a rollover, $500, runs great, not highway driveable, but great

around the farm, until I find another XJ in need of an engine.

Many people do not have $$ to pay for the repairs, or the ability to

repair it themself.......

Which means people sell them for cheap and the buyer sees a quick money making opportunity and BAM! Stripped XJ.

I've never really had a dying urge to preserve the xj race either. unless it's cherry I could really care less. I'm on xj #5 and I've only been driving for 3 years

plenty of mint cherokees left out there. those are the ones I'm interested in. no more rust bucket resto's for me
