Default Where do you keep your tools?!?!?!

I don't have a garage, or storage facility. My XJ is my "mobile workshop". It's where I go to get away from the busy life of full time jobs, spouse, kiddos, or when I feel like just going out. So I utilize my XJ, which is also my daily driver for many, many things... However space is becoming limited in the cargo hold.

I didn't have many tools before I bought this XJ, fact. Since buying it... I have purchased many. Simply because I've found another "escape" which I enjoying going to. So... It started by keeping them under the rear pull up seat. Socket sets, car jacks, rags. It didn't take long before realizing there wasn't going to be much space here. After which I attempted to "neatly" put everything in the rear cargo area. After a trip down the road I realized I wasn't going to find them where I left them.

Does anyone have tips or fabrications they've done to make a compact storage area? Or should I just start keeping my tools in the house? Post pics if you've got them. I need some ideas here.

I've been thinking about building a box for the back window complete With shocks so when you lift the back hatch the box opens down in front of you.. Right now they live in a tool bag on the floor on the passengers side.. my only co pilots are of the four legged varity! I wanna build a couple of speaker boxes for the back window so I can put in two 10" and I wanna
Make an amp rack to go under the head liner on the roof .. I have all these crazy ideas but not enough time!

A false floor is a common way to take care of it or you can carry a bunch of stuff so it all can't move lol

Yeah... I was going to say that's a little off topic.

Concerning your fold down box, wouldn't that get in the way every time you lift your hatch? You pull your hatch up, and this box comes down in front of your face everytime or what?

I'm thinking maybe I can do something with that cubby area near the rear pass. side. I like the platform Idea. Don't think I would do it THAT particular way, but I like the idea of having a flat durable surface to work on and get dirty without ruining my carpet further. I also have the tire in the too... So I'll need to work around that I suppose.

No, the point would be to have a latch on it! With a lock dynomat the back window dynomat the whole inside of the box find some way to secure the wrenches and sockets pliers ect. Then when you want it to open just open it then it's all right there right in front of you. I wanna build a box for my roof rack too to put the bigger tools in I was thinking quarter inch pressure treated ply and then line the outside with plastic diamond plate and silicone the sides.. complete with shocks to open the lid! Bad ***!!

If you're going to spend the money on PT, go with Advantec instead. It's a bit more expensive, though it's a subflooring which is much more durable, and lighter weight. I know guys that use it as dirt bike/ATV ramps, park their sleds on... That stuff will never die. True story.

Thanks! I'll keep that in mind, the idea is to keep
It light weight but look like those boxes the guys have in the back of Their pickups! But I'm not gonna be putting this idea into works for quite some time. I have a tone of things I need to get done on dirty girl before I do anything like that!

I'm personally gonna take a clue from my kayak fishing world and use milkcrates in the cargo space...bungee'd down to my tie downs. Safe and secure.

i hate havign anything in my xj that allows my tools to move around and make noise.

so i use tool bags and tuck them into a rubbermaid container. ratchet strap it tightly to my floor and they never make a peep of noise, never move around. best way of tool storage in a rig that gets wheeled.
