No need for custom bracket between the visor holder. There is about an inch between the inner bracing and the outer body. used the bracket that came with the cb- Cobra 29 LTD Classic

[QUOTE=Audioguy;819992]I reworked my CB into a ZJ overhead console and mounted it up top and out of the way

any chance you have a write up on how you did this to the CB?

Just use this this CB they are under a $100 and completely self contained. The coax, power wire, ext. spkr., connection and mic cable connect to a very small box about 2x3" that can be mounted where ever you want on the firewall or under a seat.
This unit works very well and the internal speaker works quite well and can be heard over the radio and the engine with windows open. It has a lot of options also for emergencies also in it.

I usually wheel with at least one passenger in the front, and sometimes more in the back on the way to the trailhead, so I went for the visor mount (before I had the cage installed. Now it's just directly on the cage in the same spot.)
I went down to the local Metal Supermarket and pick up a piece of scrap aluminum - tapped the holes for the visor bolts, then for the radio bracket. Worked pretty good. You can see it in the (slightly outdated) build thread below.

I have Midland very similar to Fred's cobra. Mounted it in the same spot. Self contained unit. I mounted mine with one of the magnet/steel ball setups. I have one on my cell phone too.
