When do Cherokee Sport transmissions typically die?

Lots of talk of XJ's going to 200k+ miles, but when do the tranny's generally go? For one's just driven on roads, that is.

black2000xj 10-08-2012 04:12 PM

with upkeep they will go 300k plus

best thing you can do to any transmission is a cooler

heat is a huge problem from them

BimmerJeeper 10-08-2012 04:17 PM

Approx. what would an indy mechanic charge to install one?
Is that a reasonable driveway DIY? Got a link to a DIY/parts/costs?

black2000xj 10-08-2012 04:28 PM

assuming its a aw4.....you can get them on craigslist for cheap...around here they are 150-300 dollars for a used one

i never installed a trans before...but you might be able to find someone to bolt it up for a few hundred dollars cash and a case of beer

BimmerJeeper 10-08-2012 05:45 PM

Man, really hated getting jewed on things  what was the problem? Too much sauerkraut?

Outlaw Star 10-08-2012 09:11 PM

Do we honestly have to use the term "Jewed"?? Use something else like screwed from now on please.

Looks like you reroute existing tranny lines thru this thing.
Somehow, just need to zip tie this thing behind the grille?
I am sure there are DIY's posted.

You can get that same cooler at any auto parts store and give a look at https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/tra...estion-137397/

But I use my tranny to heat my center console and keep my breakfast warm:)
