Wow Im glad this question came up.

In the past I have generally tried to figure out what they are actually saying/asking and help if I can.

As of recently I have noticed a trend that is somewhat disturbing and off putting. It normally goes like:

-horrible post grammatically
-first response has decently nice comment on the issues with grammar
-second might throw in some advice on the question
-third response is op with a smart ***** response to the first
-and like that within 4-5 post the thread has gone to sh**

This has led me to start skipping right over these post, I close them almost as soon as I opened them.

I do understand, a new user hopping on to find what he thinks is a supper rare issue with his jeep shaking violently at certain speeds and completely forgetting punctuation while getting all the details out.

I think all of us jumping on the wagon to point out how OP did in high school will never talk him into actually testing stuff before replacement...

Your thoughts?
I ignore it and move on with no response. Being mildly dyslexic and having problems with spelling myself I don't feel the need to correct someone for something like that. I also have enough trouble reading a properly structured post that trying to read something with no punctuation would be darn near impossible for me.

Most grammar **** replies come off as condescending and and that actually irks me. I have been belittled for my poor spelling, and since the advent of browser spell check, the use of the wrong word. It is something I have no control over and I have lived with for 50 years. Talking down to me and complaining about it isn't going to change anything.

Chances are that a person that writes without punctuation is either a kid, poorly educated, or has some sort of learning disability like myself. In all three cases trying to tell them to clean up their post isn't going to do anything. Well it may push someone over the edge and into full meltdown mode.

I'll try to read it, but if I get lost in the 2nd sentence I just back out and ignore it

For someone with a learning disability, you are well spoken, and that post was easy to read. I don't think it's just any one thing, it's all of it together. The difference between yourself, and others, is that you are actually TRYING. I can get over bad spelling. I can get over some missed punctuation. I can get over bad structure. Put all of it together, not so much.

I realize there are people with learning difficulties out there. But I think the majority is just lazy behavior, most younger folk would rather play Xbox than do homework.

Pretty sad, that they live here, speak the language, and can't relay that in written form.

I know not everyone has the same educational background so it doesn't bother me too much. I do, however, have to fight the urge to correct people's spelling and grammar. The fact is that in many cases good writing skills will get a more favorable response, such as in the case of getting a job; and will get you more useful responses, as in the case of this and other forums.

This is very true, and you know why? It's a venue that's based on WRITTEN WORDS. Every single forum out there is people writing out their questions, and people writing out their answers to those questions. If you can't (or choose not to) write successfully, how can you expect people to write back with good responses? It's the equivalent of trying to have a conversation with a drunk person.

X1000. Hit the nail on the head.

I don't understand why people don't proofread their posts before posting them. And then once they post it, and realize there's misspelled words or punctuation errors, why don't they edit it?

I realize this is CherokeeForum, not GrammarForum, and the grammar ****'s do come off a bit condescending sometimes, but the nonsensical walls of text we seem to get just look unprofessional.

This is probably because I am over 50 and with the advent of browsers with built in spell check I can see my mistakes. Those little red squiggly lines stand out even if the misspelling doesn't. I grew up being labeled as lazy and not applying myself by the school system. By the time I got old enough to decide if I was going to school or not I dropped out.

It wasn't till I was 30 that I realized that I needed an actual education to even get considered for a job, so I applied to college as a mature student. That is where I was finally diagnosed with a learning disability and learned some tricks to help me get through. One of those tricks is not to write when I am tired or not feeling well. If I try writing when i am tired not even the computer can figure out what I am trying to say

To the tune of many Billions of $. If one seeks to be taken seriously on the internet...on a forum asking serious questions about how to fix stuff...then maybe they should take it a bit more seriously by putting a small modicum of effort in writing something intelligible.

When giving advice about how to fix heavy and powerful publicly moving vehicles, there should be a reasonable element of seriousness in the conversation. Not everything on a Jeep is foolproof...and if the brakes fail on the highway, folks can die....for example.

Communication through writing is vitally important as I don't read and can't see sign language through the interwebz. I'm impressed with how people whose first language is not English really make an effort to communicate effectively.

In the US I'm stating to think we are suffering from a teaching, more so than a learning problem.

Case in point,
In one the the local papers there is a public school teacher that is very outspoken, and comments on a lot of articles. Every one of her posts shows that she has edited.
Fire her *** "for the children".
