I'm considering building a truly custom center console for my '91 XJ. One with all sorts of little goodies, like a CB mount, GPS mount, cell phone slot, CUPHOLDERS, and other little things. I'm making a 3d model as we speak. My questions is:

would you fiberglass the finished product or just have it vinyled?

I would fiber it. No need to re vinyl it after it peels. I would make it work with the stock lid and arm pad. If done right could look factory.

What are you making it out of?

I made a locking console for my stereo in my CJ7 out of steel. I framed it with I believe 3/4" angle iron and filled in all the flat areas with 14 gauge sheet metal. It looked similar to the ones by Tuffy but for a fraction of the cost. I also made the lid out of wood and steel and covered it with foam and black heavy duty vinyl from a fabric store. It locks with a heavy duty padlock that is enclosed to prevent anyone using bolt cutters. I even put in vents to help keep the radio cool and a light.

Why did I make it? I had my stereo stolen out of my topless CJ and they pried open the cheap plastic console to get the face plate................not gonna happen again.

Build it right and you'll only build it once.

I say go for it..........lets see your ideas.
