Hey guys, I'm about to buy my first Cherokee and was wandering about things I should watch out for? I have already decided I want a 97+ 4.0 auto with 4wd. I know about the head cracking issues in 00 and 01. How many other things should I watch for before I buy one? I have a 2004 Wrangler Unlimited so I know how to repair the engine. Thanks.

Rust and electrical issues. Everything else is relatively easy to repair/replace.
(don't freak about the window switches not working, that is a known issue and relatively easy to fix).

Driveline slop.

Check the transmission fluid, it should reddish. Black/burnt is bad.

99 is the best year of the 97+. Most issues you will fine are usually pretty easy to resolve and well documented. XJ's are very simple vehicles. Good luck with the search.
