I don't want to start WW3 on the oil debate, just curious what most of you use for your higher mileage rigs? I'm at almost 140k on the clock right now so I'm looking for recommendations.
Are you using synthetics?
What weight?
Also, if I haven't been using synthetics, would it be bad to make the switch?

Synthetic will help improve fuel mileage.
BUT
On a high mileage engine it can lead to oil consumption because its thinner and it can seep past rings and seals.
If you have one smoking a little change it to synthetic and it will quit because synthetic doesn't burn.
MYself, I use Shell Rotella 15w40 in everything.
I've got trucks with a million miles on them with no issues at all.
If you change your oil regular 3k to 4k miles no reason for synthetic, but synthetic change interval can be extended to 8k or even 10k miles if you do a lot of highway driving.

I change regularly at 3k. I used 5w30 for about 10k worth of intervals, but I think that was making my oil pressure sender to drop. Once I went back to 10w30 it's been fine...

I read up a bunch on synthetics and found one of the overall favored to be castrol syntec- so I try to get that, but now I usually just buy whichever full synthetic package is on sale at pep boys, usually for about 32$ with the filter. 5W30. I tend to go with synthetic because it lubricates at much lower temperatures, so it lubricates the engine right away when its freezing cold outside here in Colorado.

I used 10w40 in the winter and 20w50 in the summers on my old engine. The heavier weight helped with the rear main seal leak in the summer months. Also helped with peace of mind when the because the hot summers with the 10w30 in would so 0 oil pressure on my gauge.
Now with my new engine... IDK yet. Will have to play with it. I put 10w30 in for now to clean up the stuff from sitting in my garage.

Castrol GTX high mileage 10w-30 year round. 4.0 with 150k and not a single leak or tick coming from it. Change it every 3k with a WIX filter. In fact, it's one of the "to do's" for this weekend.
