I had a front axle shaft seal leak. So I pulled the hubs and axles out, drained the oil, pulled the carrier out, and changed the seals very carefully. Was very careful about putting everything back together so the seals woulsnt get damaged.
3 weeks later it was leaking just as bad as before. I was furious.
Pulled the axle shaft and noticed a wear ring where the seal rides. So I put a new axle shaft in and it still leaks but not nearly as bad. I've learned to live with it but it still bothers me
I am trying to be leak free, and the last thing to button up is the filter adapter. I am a forklift mechanic, and rarely consult mechanical advise, and go for it myself. I got the o ring kit, and blew a gasket when I realized I couldn't get my t60 on a ratchet on the damn bolt.
But all that you all have mentioned above, would send me to the moon as well.
No tantrums or whizzing tools across the driveway.
But plenty of those uh oh moments.
Like when I busted the top bolt on my water pump and just stared at it all slack jawed thinking this is not good.
Got lucky on that one though. There was plenty of stud and was able to get it out on the first try.
Tantrum is a bit strong, but i wanted to punch a puppy in the face trying to put the window lock on the master switch back together. It was sticking so i took it apart to fix it, not knowing how it actually worked. There is a small spring at the bottom with an arm that fits a tiny hole. The other end of the spring follows a track as you push the button. The cover is what keeps the spring where it needs to be. The spring kept shifting as soon as it would clear the cover and had to be taken apart again. Took me 1/2 an hour to get it right. PITA.
Buying my first Jeep and looking forward to enjoying it, only to find out someone took it upon themselves to install a remote start system and XM satellite radio system, both total hack jobs. Took me hours to get all of it out.
I was driving a beat up 86 so had the 2.5 l I think and selectrac and bumped the hnl lever and the tcase went into n and can't shift to hi or lo even manually just grinds like hell. Thinking about a 350 swap now oh did I mention this was the 20 min trip home from buying it
1) Quite annoying when I've paid a reputable shop a good sum of money only to discover years later that the work was done in a somewhat shoddy manner (radiator replacement).
2) Quite annoying when I've paid a reputable shop a good sum of money only to discover later that I could diagnose and fix the problem myself for $15 and no downtime (the famous fuel pump replacement, followed by me replacing the fuel pump relay).
3) Quite annoying when a reputable shop charged me a good sum of money only to discover immediately that they did not fix what I plainly asked them to fix (famous emergency brake cable adjustment, Merchant Auto, Reston, VA). AND they did not adjust the bill either.

Hey, I didn't realize you are a neighbor!
Check out Sunset Hills Automotive. I've been there a few times and was very impressed. All three times were emergency situations (I work not far from there, so....) and they could have taken advantage of me. Once it was my wife, and you know how unscrupulous shops are about women with emergency repairs needed. She was treated very well. They aren't cheap, but if I'm in the area and need a shop, this is where I'm going.
When we lived in Herndon I used Gill's Automotive, but I just checked and their website has evaporated. They were great.
A co-worker is an old buddy of the owner of AutoScandia, and we used to take our fleet vehicles there. A half dozen of my co-workers used them and spoke very well of them. But I had my Cherokee in there once, and they were okay, but they sort of hinted that they really didn't like working on older vehicles.....

Ah, not far from McTacoHut and the 12 Monkeys lab. But, I moved to Crystal City in 2004, then to TN in 2011.
