Default What do you mean by lift?

I have read many threads on this forum and many refer to "LIFT". Pardon my ignorance but can someone please explain to me in layman's terms what "lift" is. Here in the UK we may give the same item a different name.
Thank You.
Paul.

its pretty much the raising of the suspension on our jeeps, with bigger coils, leaves, shocks, etc.

i dont know how else to explain it, im sure somebody else on here can go more in depth but thats pretty much all there is to it

The stock height of a jeep Cherokee is around 17 inches from the center of the front wheel to the bottom of the fender lip. A three inch lift will make that measurement 21 inches.

Should have checked the photos before I pushed the post button.

What in the bloody hell does "lift" mean in the U.K.? Here in the states, when your talking about a lifted vehicle you are referring to the height over stock of that vehicle. So lets say, given that the average xj has 8" or 203.2mm of clearance from the ground, if I were to "lift" it 3" over stock then it would have 11" or 279.4mm of total ground clearance. So when your talking about a lifted vehicle you are talking about an after stock suspension...new shocks, new coils, new leaf springs, etc...

Ground clearance is a bit more precise when talking about the direct affect or outcome of a lift. But what would you say to describe something with more ground clearance than normal or to describe the process of creating more ground clearance on a vehicle?
