What do people think of the JEEP Commander?
My wife loves our 2000 Cherokee...I've taken a real liking to it as well. We have 4 kids, and need a "big" car. Looking at a 4-6 year old Commander or Dodge Durango. Possibly a Chevy Tahoe.
I really am not crazy about the current minvan/SUV that seems to be popular (i.e. current model year Durango, Explorer, etc.)
Anyone have any advice or opinions you care to share??

I have wheeled with a guy that has a commander. They do pretty well offroad but my buddy had a hard time getting out of a ditch. He ended up ripping off part of his rear bumper. I think they make pretty good daily drivers, but I can't say I would every buy one.

I dont like the newer 4wd system where its always engaged, with the option of 4lo. Otherwise as a daily driver im a fan. The father of a friend of mine has an 06 with a hemi, and that throttle has a direct link to the size of smile on my face. I think the previous gen Durangos are ugly in styling, and have too much interior plastic surface. The thing feels big, but it feels like your driving a mcdonalds playground to me.

my mom has an 07, drives great and is pretty slick.
bad:
horrible on gas(12-14 mpgs)
4wd only has 4lo option
good:
they look nice
drives like a ferrari compared to my xj
really comfortable if you get the leather seat.( i dont suggest getting cloth, stains easy and not so comfortable)

The most capable ifs vehlicle made today.. please don't call it a car.. yes it has IFS but it's offroad prowless for being IFS is top 3. It's a Jeep not a Car.. If gas millage doesn't mean much to you they make excellent dd's.. comfy ride and if you get one with the v8 and especially the hemi they tow very good as well. Solid all around vehlicle.. the down fall as said before is no option for 2H-4H-N-4L only full time 4wd-N-4L

I liked the '99 durango my mom had, SLT package so it was power everything with leather. Rode pretty nice for a bigass suv, hated the blindspot the A pillars gave. The 340 it had barely got out of it's own way but the 4wd worked to my liking.

OK, OK....Calling it a "Car" is probably an insult...but the point is that it will probably very rarely go off-road...mostly a soccer mom type vehicle. I want to power to take the family camping in the summer, and pull a small camper.
The Commander seems a bit pricier than some other stuff out there (i.e. Tahoe or Durango). I am mostly questioning the durability and serviceability.

in a few years, once a decent used one becomes a little more affordable, i want to lift one and do a full size sas (d60s) and long arms and run 37s.
and i guess, change that dumb *** transfer case. can you say atlas/d300 doubler with twin sticks? mmmmmm
