We made it through the summer without A/C but absolutely positively refused to go all winter without heat. A strategic combination of low-buck part acquisitions, knuckle-busting, shop-tasking and $1250 over a 3 month period yielded working HVAC as-of this past month. All new radiator, water pump, t-stat/housing, hoses, heater core, A/C evaporator core and compressor in a 13yo XJ with 180K miles on it. It's time to take a breather and drive it like my DD awhile.
Thinking-out-loud... If I get a good winter's service from it then I think I'll keep it for another couple years and ~20K-30K miles. If you do the math, it still beats the monthly total car loan/insurance payments for a new car.
...except for that damned 13mpg city/18mpg highway fuel mileage issue.

Worked on fixing my DW. Does anyone know how to remover the tie rod end at the pitman arm? I used a fork, ball joint press, beat the sh** out of it, and it refuses to move.

Replaced my idler pulley. The howl I had heard last week, turned into a "screaming like a banshee" kind of noise this morning. While at work, I was able to pinpoint the noise with a mechanics stethoscope and picked up a new one on the way home.

EDIT: If you have an air hammer, sometimes you can use that to free things up a bit

Had a growling noise from the pinon bearings in my front axle, put a t-case drop on to better my driveshaft angle. I hate bandaids but it will suffice until I swap in a high pinion.
