Default Volvo LSD/Locker in D30

My friend and I started a youtube channel called Enlisted Budget Videos, which complements our Enlisted Budget Racing Facebook page. It's something we've talked about for awhile now and finally went ahead and made it happen. We try and bring informative, and easy to follow videos about off-road and Jeep related topics and have some fun at the same time.

Our first video is about the notorious volvo locker and the info that is hard to find on any forum. We show you in person, what it is, what it does, and the very important fact that it does indeed work. I figured i'd share it here and see what people think. (note: We aren't as funny as the Pabst Boys but they still think it's great )

Read the description for the details on what its found in. Two more videos will be made regarding the identification of the different volvos it can be found in and a well as an offroad application video. I can tell you now it can hand some stress. Its been raced with and jumped with at East Coast Offroad Racing Series by my friend in the video and Andy Carter, owner of Ironman4x4fab.

Enjoy and leave comments and ask questions. Its just as much as a learning opportunity to us as it is to you.

Feel free to subscribe, there's a lot more coming, and not just volvo related.

Sub'd, good video so far. I've read into them and though I am not looking to do it, it was nice to have it explained. Didn't know about the cutting driveshaft part either.

I think its great for a low profile build.

So far it seems that not a whole lot of people knew that this was even a thing. The hardest part is finding one usually.

Do you know about the gearing? I know that many carriers for the 30 are gear range specific.

The ones that you'll find in the turbos and automatic 740GL w/ tow package I have verified to be 3:73 up carriers. There are 3:55 ones out there I believe but I haven't came across any yet so I can't tell you what they came in. The one I pulled was 4:10.

This looks like a nice upgrade for a daily driven car. A nice auto locking diff that has good on road driving ability is nice to have in the front.

I will have to keep an eye on this....

If i wasn't set on a truetrac I would look more into this. What happens if you don't shave the shafts?

You only have to chop a little off driver side shaft. Its so you don't have the shaft sticking out so far. It sticks out because of the carrier and the design of it doesn't allow the entire length to fit for whatever reason.

Its very nerve racking having to cut into chromoly shafts.... So measure twice cut once.

Just found a 1987 Volvo 740 Turbo in the j/y. It was a open diff, dang it. I guess a turbo does not assure
a limited slip?

Hmm that's the first I've heard of that. Most noted, but are you sure it was a turbo? If it indeed was a turbo than perhaps that means it is possible youre right.

Volvo 740's didn't lock until the 89 model year.

Yep, It was definitely a turbo car. Had 4.10/4.11 gears but it was a open diff.

What year was it?

Black label makes a good point that they didn't lock until 89.
