Looking to sell my '01 2wd XJ sport for a '00 4wd XJ sport i found. My 2wd has 150,000 miles on it, and the 4wd I would be looking to buy has just over 200k on the transmission and body, and a newly rebuilt engine, for $2500. I just recently got my 2wd, and soon realized I would not be able to do the off-roading I wanted to do with my 2wd, but it was such a great deal I could not pass it up. There are lots of modifications I would make to the 4wd that I wouldn't want to make to the 2wd.
Enough info, my question is would it be worth it to try to sell my 2wd and buy the 4x4? I was looking to at the VERY LEAST break even with selling the 2wd to be able to afford the $2500 4wd. My only concern is the amount of miles on the 4wd, I was looking for this to be a daily driver car while getting me off-road the few times I want it to.

You should look into converting from 2wd to 4wd. Ive never done it myself but i hear its pretty staright forward and not too expensive. I highly doubt the guy has a rebuilt motor for $2500, and who knows how well maintains vehicles. Your jeep on the other hand has 150k which is NOTHING for this motor, and will prolly last another 150k with routine maintenance.

Where would I even go about getting all the parts? I imagine buying a junk jeep off craigslist would be around $1000 at least, unless I bought from an actual junk yard.

Well the most important parts youd need to start with are, transfer case, front axle, and front driveshatf. You might find all said parts on craigslist pulled already. Just go thru them make sure theyll in decent condition.
Find a jeep that has been rear ended or rolled over that still runs and drives.Take the trans t case and linkage the front axle both drive drives and few small odds and ends.

Good stuff as far as converting vs. buying new. I had an offer for $3000 on my car so I want to sell it and buy the 4x4 for $2500, Brand new engine, 200k on the tranny, but apparently that's nothing for a jeep. Leaves me with a little spending money.

Well not to much.. your gonna have to do an emissions test (depending on your are) pay a couple hundred for tags/registration. Then your gonna want to at LEAST drain ALL previous fluids which can get sorta pricey.
