I have a 96 with fiberglass hatch and have had many times where I could not open the gate when flexed. Also had times where I couldn't close the gate when flexed. The rear gate deffinately plays a role in stiffness.

Just because the opening for the door changes shape doesn't mean that door plays a role in structure.

The door flexes with that opening.

It may not be structural but it does help keep the uni body from flexing so in a way I guess it is structural.

Yeah, if its flexing with the body it sure as hell isn't preventing unibody flex.

And sure isn't structural, either.

I call bs, how is a fiberglass gate going to add any stiffness what's so ever? Let's see.. It has 2 top hinges on the roof.. And then 1 latch on the rear floor.. So we have 3 little points mounted to the body during a big body twist. I broke my tail gate cause of it. Its weak, I've even met Chrysler techs that said the gates had a recall because they aways broke above the tail light as a grocery getter soccer mom mobile lol!

This. Sticking a toothpick between your fingers doesn't make it bone just because it provides resistance.
