I had a '94 Cherokee that I sold a few years back and I regretted it from day one. I'm now looking at a 2001 Cherokee to use as my daily driver.
Would you buy this Jeep given the amount of rust on the undercarriage? Is this something that can be "fixed" using POR15, rust bullet, or eastwood rust encapsulator? It looks like the original owner may have sprayed something similar in the past to slow the rust.
Thanks in advance for your help!

The rust on the suspension components and leaf springs isn't a big deal. The frame rails and floors are what you should inspect closely, and those look pretty solid to me. Also, check the rockers, and the inside door bottoms for rust. A little wire wheeling and POR15 or similar product will work just fine for the undercarriage.
What rust lol,The rust that matters is the rocker panels the floor pans and the frame rails.Everything in those pictures is just surface rust and is normal. The rust that should bother you is thick scaley looking or rust holes big enough to stick a finger or fist in.
If really in doubt about any rust stab it with a small screwdriver to see if it puts a hole in it. if so it has a real problem. Like floor pans, rocker panels, door bottoms, etc.
That's not rust, that's called pateena
It'll just buff out
This is rust, and it buffed up just fine
Don't forget the paint, you can weld thru paint in the future, don't use the ashphalt spray!
Thanks for posting pics regarding undercarriage rust being too much. I recently bought a 2000 Cherokee that had around the same amount of surface rust and in the back of my mind I was wondering if I messed up. Granted it doesn't have as much rust as my 78 j10 does haha
I have a similar question and figured to aks it in this thread and not open a new one.
I am looking to buy an XJ right now and this is how she looks from underneath, Is this drivers side floor pan too far gone?
I would appreciate it if you guys can give me your thoughts on this.
Thanks!
Phil
I just dealt with alot of rust issues.....unless you are getting a great deal, and have the tools, welder, and patience for repairs, I would stay clear of that vehicle. I'm sure there will be more problem areas, but if not you can buy the floor pan from quadratec, and either weld it in, or use pieces to patch your floor.
First thing I would do is really inspect the frame rails. Bring a screwdriver and poke at them. If they are shot, run. If the owner doesnt want you poking at them, also run.
