Mine is a 1999 and the trim is held on by that double sided tape.

You just need to pull the old trim off and use one of these:http://www.tcpglobal.com/autobodydep...no=MTG+E-4000S with a drill to remove the two sided tape.

Just a thought since you said you wish you had a job to buy that strip eliminator...

I used scotch brite pad and mothers back to black. The pads really scrape the white scum look off. Here's some before and afters on my Jeep.

painted mine with duplicolor for plastic. came out great. masking was a hassle but worth it.
did the flares, mouldings, bumper ends, door handles.

yea, thats what he did with the scotchbrite pad. that gray stuff is oxidation and will come off to some degree. i used a sanding sponge. problem with back to black is you gotta do it every week or two, more if it rains. painting is permanant

I did it a couple months ago and it's still looking good but as stated it will fade again.

I took the trim off mine, it looks so much better. I just pull the trim off and used my thumb to peel the tape off. Then I used Turtle Wax sticker & decal remover to get the left over sticky residue off.
