1: anybody know a mechanic in the San Diego are that specializes in jeeps?

2: Already have a 4.0 HO, what's the skinny on the 4 banger made available in the XJ (other than the obvious HP deficit).. is it a good engine, does it last, consistently pass smog etc.. I wouldn't mind having a lighter more fuel efficient XJ if the engine is any good..

If you find a 91-01 4 cylinder with a 5 speed trans it should have decent enough power for a daily driver. They are factory rated at 145 hp and the 5 speeds have 3.07 gearing. Swap that out for some 3.55 axles from a XJ with 4.0 and auto and it should be a little screamer.

5-spd 4cyl. have 4.10 gears. 3.07 are under 4.0 5-spd. rigs.

I stand corrected. Had a brain fart and failed to remember the 4 cyl - 6 cyl difference.
