Towing a Mustang with my Lifted XJ?
Ok, so I need to tow one of my mustangs to a State Patrol academy to get the VIN verified (apparently all police stations don't do that), so I can sell the damn thing because I was too lazy to get the title transferred when I bought it (non-running)
Its an 87 LX Foxbody, 4cyl and curb weight says ~2800lbs. No spare tire, and the car is gutted so probably close to ~2600lbs.
Can I tow one of these with a uhaul tow dolly? They won't let me rent a full trailer because apparently the 'Rokee is too ***** made for towing
Almost bought a Dodge 2500 because of it, but someone beat me to it (to be fair, it was a 12v 5-speed Cummins in really good shape for $6000, and I DO end up needing to tow stuff pretty frequently and am getting sick of borrowing my friends truck).
Anyways, my XJ is lifted 4.5" on 33's and I am not sure what size drop-hitch I would need since the only one I have is for a standard-height pickup
I am not too worried about towing it (its mostly surface streets to/from avoiding the highway), but I am not sure what I will need as far as a drop hitch.
Never used a tow dolley, but I think I should be OK for sub 40mph speeds on the way to and from. I will be pulling the driveshaft from the Mustang as well for safety/peace of mind. I have only towed a small utility trailer with my XJ (and only time I have towed with a lifted vehicle) so I am a bit concerned about the height.

you should be fine.
is the mustang auto or 5 speed?
auto, pull the shaft. 5 speed, just leave in neutral.
make sure it's strapped down properly and use 2 safety chains. tow lights are most likely required.
see what it would cost for a tow truck. it's probably not much more than the cost of renting the dolly.

Make sure your swaybar is hooked up and take it easy. I've only used a tow dolly once and it was scary. If the vehicle in tow starts to sway then accelerate out, don't hit the brakes.

I would check but I think that any vehicle with tires touching the street must be registered and licensed. I would put it on a trailer and rent a truck from uhaul to tow it.
Possibly the Police academy will ticket or impound the mustang for being on the street without being registered and licensed.
I wouldn't walk into a police station waving a gun either.

I pulled my race car once to the track with the XJ on this trailer (it has brakes on both axles, surge) on the highway. It was not a good choice and why I only did it once. It lacked power and even with 4.56 gears pulled hard.
The wagon weights 2,840 # with 5 gal of fuel, trailer weighs 1,375 # with tools and other gear.

Good looking out - they probably would have denied me the VIN verification to be difficult, probably would have given me a ticket to be arseholes
Well, never mind - tow dolly is out because of how ticket happy the cops in **** Denver have been lately, and I can't tow a full-size trailer with the XJ

Most DMV's will issue a temporary one day allowance to move a vehicle that not currently registered to operate

I also asked if I could bring it by my local PO station and they also said no. There are 2 in the city of Denver and the hilarious thing is they are like 10 minutes away from eachother
Totally useless

i didn't mean a truck and trailer. i meant an actual tow truck.
here we charge 45 bux. it might be cheaper where you are.
unless you have AAA, call it in as if it were broken down and plated, then when the driver gets there, throw him a 20 and he should do it for ya.
if not, you're not out any cash, and you can go with plan B.

A deputy Sheriff should be able to do them. In Wyoming you can either take it to the city hall, take it to the SO or call dispatch and they will send someone to your house.

Its been that way for a long time in CO. that the CSP had to do the title request of that type. I had abandoned cars in my towing lots and that is how I got titles for them, had to have one even to crush.

Yeah, I verified that
A) any police officer can sign the form, but it is at their discretion
B) That they will absolutely not dispatch an officer for that, NOR will the accommodate the request at most police stations
C) A uhaul dolly does require a plated and insured car for it to be legal (but they couldn't explain how I get it home to load up said plated/insured vehicle)
Going with the uhaul + a truck I guess...
