Default Tow Hooks Mounted to the Axle

I was talking to my buddy that i wheel with on the weekend, and he was telling me about how the Bronco Forum he's apart of that some of the Broncos had tow hooks welded up the the left/right front/rear axle. By doing this it was stated that when the rig would get stuck they would hook the winch up to axle mounted tow hook instead of the bumper. It was said that they could pull the rig out easier and faster?

1. Has anyone done this?

2. Does it work?

3. Are there any long term affects of this?

I've seen a video on YouTube where an axle was pulled out from under a vehicle by pulling from the axle.

It would be bad idea to pull it out like that. IE the video they have mentioned.

However I actually do like the idea for towing on a trailer. It would be a great point for straps (instead of around the axle and under the brake lines. To strap the jeep down. I may actually do this for that reason.

I agree. NO GO. Thats a good way to break something or rip out an axle.

that didnt happen from hooking to the axle.... they were pulling at the worst possible angle for the situation. not to mention the tow strap was hooked to the bumper not the axle that proves nothing.

No matter where you pull from in the mud, you need to dig out if your as sunk as that guy.

seen it done before. does it work? yeah. but when it doesnt, it ruins your whole day. also, have fun hooking up a cable or strap when they are most likely buried in the mud.

As pointed out earlier.. great for towing rig on trailer. Really bad idea to do t as a recovery point. Especially if it is in mud. Lots of times on the rocks it woudnt be safe to try to crawl under a rig to hook a cable to.
