So I'm sure this has been covered before but I couldn't find it searching so be gentle =). I was wondering what the top speeds are for 4wd high/low. I thought low was something super slow like 10MPH but I have no idea about high and don't want to mess up the rig on the interstate. I bought it used and there was no owner's manual with it. If it matters, it has a 4.5" lift with 33s....it has 31s in this pic though. Thanks in advance guys and gals!

in my 04 WJ manual it says do not exceed 25 mph in 4Lo. 2wd to 4wd part time can be shifted to at speed up to 55 mph so I'm assuming there is not really a limit on 4HI although imo if you need 4 wd then you probably do not need to be going more than 50 or 60 mph.

Low range is a matter of feel, typically if you need low range your not going to be wanting to go faster than 15 to 20mph anyway, by the time you get to 25 or 30 mph your engine is going to sound like your running 80mph.
High Range has the same gearing as 2wd so just drive normal or as fast as you feel comfortable and never use 4wd on dry pavement.

Also if you do shift into 4wd hi while driving its always good to either pop into neutral first or, at the very least lift off the gas. Just a little nicer to the t-case

Why would you be driving in 4HI on the interstate? 4x4 isn't for driving on pavement. If you are asking about driving on packed snow and ice on the interstate you shouldn't be driving fast enough to worry about hurting your t/case.

What T/case do you have? If you've got a 4 FT option then you can run that on dry pavement at whatever speed you like. Otherwise, don't do 4WD on grippy surfaces. You need some slip between the front and rear axles on corners if you're in 4PT.

the manual states that you can shift on the fly into 4HI up to 55mph so I doubt there really is any "limit" to how fast you can go. basically, road conditions is what determines your top speed in 4WD

I guess you don't have to. The Jeeps I have owned have never seemed to like being shifted on the fly.

In 4x4 you can still go pretty fast so long as your in high gear, if it's raining pretty good I'll throw it in 4x4 on the highway just for the reassurance of having that extra bit of grip, I went up to 70 like that... it's hard to get any faster with 32's, stock 3.55 gearing, and a tire on your roof.

Yesterday there was 3 inches of unplowed unpacked snow that wasn't bad....light fluffy stuff.....but if I can have the 4x4 engaged as a "just in case" I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't break anything. The top speed I feel comfortable driving this thing on dry pavement is 65 so it's not like I'm zooming around. My other car is a subaru WRX so it's not an issue with that one. I'm new to the 4x4 scene so I just wanted to make sure I didn't injure the zombie killer. Thanks a lot guys and gals!

my xj (NP231) shifted on the fly with ease. so does my truck (NP241)

as long as you are coasting in gear, not putting a load on the TC when you shift into 4WD, it should go right in no issues.

It snows in Oregon too, but you asked about driving in 4hi on the interstate with no mention of snow so I was unsure of what you were asking about, that is why I gave the opinion I did.
