Well I have been looking at the tires on tread wright and the size I'm going to run is the 285 75 16's. I drive about 20+ miles one way each day to work. I'm looking either at the MTR or the BFGoodrich A/Ts look a like's. I lightly wheel my xj nothing extreme just like to play in some mud and crawl over some rocks. But I just would like to know which would be better for me.

AT's will still do reasonably off road, and MT road manners are not unacceptable. You'll have to decide which benefit is more important to you. If you keep the off roading pretty light, and only do it once in a while, the AT is probably a better choice.
After running BFG At's for the better part of my XJ's life, I finally decided I wasn't a huge fan of them. I'm not sure where you are located, but that may have a lot to do with your decision. While I had no complaints with the BFG's on the street, off road was another story in my opinion. I replaced my BFG's with the MTR, and have used the MTR for the last 3 months. Here is a brief opinion on the two:
While driving through deeper snow, the BFG's would compact the snow, to the point where I was just spinning on top and not gaining traction. I didn't get a chance to test the MTR's in snow.
During the summer months, while heading up to my cabin, I found they would tend to briefly lose traction on the steeper switch backs, whereas the MTR's I replaced them with, would NEVER lose traction in the same areas.
On wet roads, I found the MTR's to perform better. The BFG's were never very good in the rain. This may have something to do with the fact that my BFG's were 10.5" wide and the MTR's were 9.5" wide. (31x10.50-15's BFG VS. 245/75/16 MTR)
One thing I will give the BFG at's, is they were tough as nails. I beat them up pretty good, and they took everything I would throw at them. I don't doubt the MTR's would have taken some abuse, I just didn't have the chance to abuse them very much.
Obviously on road manners of the BFG were better, as far as noise is concerned, but the MTR's were not unbearable. In my opinion, the on road manners of the BFG, did not outweigh the Off road performance of the MTR. If it were me, i'd choose the MTR design.
I've since replaced my MTR's with Cooper STT's, and still have yet to test them out with anything.
