Default These 33x10.5 km2s are really pissing me off

I bought a set of 5 about 2 months ago, got a very good price through a friend who can buy them at wholesale price. They came mounted and balanced from the vendor on brand new Rock Krawler steel rims. I put them on about a month later when I had the time to trim my fenders.

Well, I put them on my cherokee and got the shakes between 50-60 mph. Over 65 and it would go away, under 45 and it was very smooth. Pretty clearly a tire issue, right?

So I went down to my local discount tire and had them rebalanced. Same issue. Took the jeep to a 4x4 shop, had them align it, that didn't fix it either. The owner told me it was probably a tire problem. So I went back to discount and asked them to balance the tires again, they balanced them dynamically this time (wtf why wouldn't you do that the first time?). They felt better when I left the shop, but I didn't have time to take them up to speed before going out of town. Got back home a week later, tested it out, STILL had the damn shakes.

The same 4x4 shop was regearing my axles the following week, so I asked them to take it for a spin on the highway and see if they felt anything I didn't. Got it back and they said it felt like a tire problem, probably a bad tire that needed to be warrantied.

So finally, tonight I decided to tackle the time consuming task of rotating and testing the tires to try and find the bad one. Well, after 3 hours of swapping and testing, I determined:
- Changing tire positions definitely changed the shakes, it got better or worse depending which are in the front
- I have no idea which tires are bad because I could not get rid of the shakes no matter what tire I swapped to the front/back, or to the spare. It would get better, or worse, but wouldn't go away completely. By the 4th trip out I was getting really pissed off. I'm thinking at least 2 are bad, if not more.

I'm sick of throwing money and time at the problem trying to fix it, so now I get to try and negotiate how to warranty all 5 tires, though my friend, who has to act as a middle man. Of course, it's time for finals, and the holiday season, so everyone is busy. This might not get solved until after the holiday season. Grrr...

Ok, done ranting. thanks for listening, had to get that frustration off my chest.

I bought the xj 4 months ago, everything in the front end is tight. The 4x4 shop confirmed this when I got the alignment, and when they test drove it for me. The previous owner kept the 31x10.50s that were on it, and the problem did not exist when I test drove it with those. The only thing that has changed are the tires.

Stock steering, but I have an IRO double sheer track bar waiting to go in when I get the chance. There is very little movement on the current stock track bar mount.

I have done my homework. I've read every thread I can find on death wobble and front end shimmy/shake, including the mega one talking about all the different factors. It's just frustrating.

I've considered it. It's just hard to justify the cost of a RF balance to identify defective tires that already cost me ~$1k.

Discount will do a road force balance for an extra $30 if their regular balance doesn't find/fix the issue.

I've got 33x10.5 KM2's on my ZR2 that I dd. Mine act the exact same way as you've described yours, same speeds and everything . I've had mine balanced twice now I believe and have about 12k on them with the shakes.

How much weight did each tire call for? Even If it balances out with 10oz of weight it will still ride bad

I never balanced my 35" km2s on beadlocks and they rode smooth as anything up to 90 mph.

not even bead balance? what kind of steering did you have?

when i went from 235's to 32's i had shakes too. i moved tires around as well. when the shakes lessen, that means you got the worst two on the back (well to me anyways). Then i did my own alignment instead of going to a shop. It took a few tries before i got it right, but i ended up with almost 1/4" toe in and no shakes up to 140km/hr (88 mph McFly), past that i don't know cause i'm usually time traveling or something. Good luck man.

Tell us about your 3" lift... are you running stock control arms? Look under there and see if the lowers are all the way forward in the brackets at the frame. There is a slot there and it is adjustable. If they're not, your caster angle is probably off and the shop didn't mess with them because you're lifted on stock arms.
