What's wrong with the speedometer? Not responsive at all? Take out the gauge cluster and make sure all contacts are nice and corrosion free. You may be looking at a new speedometer sensor like I had to do a while back. It's on the output of the transfer case.
And keep the flares black.

You can't exactly judge whether or not a sensor works by looking at it......... Unfortunately
Follow the wires from the connector of the speedo sensor all the way back. Make sure it's in good shape and not burnt anywhere.
If that checks out, unbolt the speedo sensor and gear, pull it out and make sure everything is meshing right in there.
If that checks out, buy a new speedo sensor from rockauto.com for ~$30
