As stupid as it may sound but:
Whats the correct way to engage 4x4? I have a 1996 4.0L with AW-4 and NP242 transfer case... ?
 |
stop, put it in neutral then pull the 4wd lever to either 4wd H or 4wd L
|
Its better to engage while moving. If in to 4hi- shift under 45mph. If into 4Lo then 2-3mph

You can do it while moving, just make sure your wheels are not slipping...

Im pretty sure 45 wont do anything bad... For some reason I am wanting to say the maximum speed is 55.
|
wow so you can engage into 4wd hi going between 45 and 55mph
|
yup, in our manual, it say's tranny in neutral and shift into 4hi between 80-90kph, so 45-55mph.
but yeah, for 4lo, 2-3mph is best, but it's still ok to do while not moving at all. |
aight cool might have to try is sometime........not, well thanks for the info, hope that helped the guy who started this thread

A more perfect example is driving in sand... |
yeah except i live in moblie alabama and i havent seen snow in 13 years lol but sand is a good example down here
|
I had a feeling you lived in a snow free region... lol
|
haha yeah i was 5 the last time it snowed, and it melted within a few days, but sand is an issue down here at a fes spots we wheel, oh i was going down to the beach last weekend and had to do a u-turn and there was sand on the side of the road and i had to go through it to completely turn around and got stuck in 2wd, then locked it in 4wd and crawled right out! gotta love 4wd!!!
|
5 years old huh... Must not happen to often then lol... Rust free climate has to be nice.
|
yeah i was a little thing! yeah rust free is great! and it probly will never snow here again.....
|
My dad was wanting to buy a 4 banger MJ for a parts truck during the restoration job... The guy only wanted like 1200 or 1500 or something for the whole truck... The truck was totally rust free. I kind of wish we could of drove down and bought it. I hear Alabam is a pretty state.
|
yeah it is pretty pretty lol if you see the right part, the beaches are real nice, and theres lots of land and trails and country to ride on, i love it here

I have put both of my XJ's in 4hi at 70mph, on the highway. I do it all the time. 4Lo I stop put it in neutral and then shift, if you don't most jeeps will grind depending on the linkage adjustment. |
o boy! thank you everyone! :D
And does the NSS come into play when shifting? Because my NSS isn't working correctly and the Jeep doesn't engage 4wd. Yes, I'm troubleshooting some () problems.. |

Not when shifting into 4wd |
you can actually engage 4-hi at any safe high way speed...
and ive always found that i dont grind at all going into 4-lo by moving at about 2 MPH, like some one else said, but then putting it in neutral while coasting, then pulling it on back to 4-lo...ive never got a grind out of it doing it that way but i have grinded it before if i slow down to 2 MPH but keep it in gear and pull the lever back, or if i come to a complete stop with it in neutral, i still sometimes get a grind....but like i said, moving at 2 MPH, in neutral, i always get a clean smooth shift into 4-lo and thats with both the manual in my 93 XJ, and the auto in my 04 WJ |
well thats good to know
|
you have the np242 which is in 4wd all the time(select trac) the np231 gives you the choice of 2wd or 4wd (command trac)
|
242 is also a 2wd t-case. it just gives you the added option of running in full time 4wd. it has 2wd, 4 full-time, 4 part-time and 4 low. with neutral in there somewhere.
you're thinking of the 249 t-case which is full time 4wd with just hi and lo. it's the quadra-trac. |
