Wow how did you do that? I know In some large boat shafts for the props they line them with cardboard.
They line them with cardboard to try and cut the hum or harmonic ringing that can happen as they spin.

maybe the same for that??

So I was going up about a 2 foot step, got the front tires on, and I think when I went forward I smacked and bent the drive shaft taking away any structural integrity, then gassed it, and being in 4lo just ripped it like it was a can. I had originally thought I snapped a shaft because I'm locked in the back and when I looked at my rear driver tire it wasn't spinning, to say the least, the broken DS was a pleasant surprise to what I thought happened, I thought a U-joint would've given first

Cool on it not being the axle. I bet your right, the shaft might have been weaken when it was smacked..

But I did find some stuff on the cardboard on the inside.
Looks as if Im right, its for sound deadening.

For $200. I recommend Curtis Tatton of Tatton's Driveline.
Also, Adams Driveshaft.
Both of these guys answer the phone and will deal with you directly even though they are on e-bay.
