mine was 3,300 all said and done. thats with the odds and ends of installation and new accessory parts.
you can do a 4.5L stroker for much less if you go the economy route.
mines also all forged so if i want to put nitrous to it i can. and its set up for propane.
but right now im fighting it soooo much trying to get my bellhousing bolts to line up. im frustrated so im takin a break.

I spent 3 hours struggling with it before I realized the TC wasn't in there 100%. D:

I was trying to decide wether to have a local shop rebuild mine to specs similar to these or purchase Golen's crate 4.7L stroker. That's why I was asking costs.

AHH. I just had him do the engine work and assemble the shortblock. i also had to have my head repaired. Mine is all custom though. you can do a regular 4.7 for under 2k

ive put about 1000 miles on it.
since i took out the a/c condenser it runs at 205
that takes care of the 4.7 running hotter issue.
love this engine. im getting great gas mileage, cant tell you exact because my odometer is off due too 33's but its about 70 miles more than i used to get from a tank.

You have no reason to complain with the engineering on the XJ. Try working on a Ford Probe, designed by Mazda. I don't have huge hands by any means and it requires some skills in contortioning just to get at the harmonic balancer. Putting headers on it require two of us struggling for 2 hours, and one of us had done it before numerous times. Good thing he had a spare block in the yard. We ended up putting the headers on there so we could bend the EGR tube to be out of the way.
